ESD Workshop: Anti-static Flooring – The Basics
(An AIA-IDEC accredited course)
Our workshop on ESD flooring—also known as antistatic or static-control flooring—is easily adaptable for facilities owners and managers, contractors, or flooring installers.

Brian Frels
AIA, NCARB, ARIUM ae
In This Workshop We’ll Discuss
- How static-control flooring works
- Why every application is different
- Key industry terms
- Industry standards and tests
- How to choose the right floor for every application
Michael James McKeon
AIA, LEED AP, MCPPO, Kaestle Boos Associates, Inc.
What You’ll Learn
- Who needs static-control flooring and why
- How to limit liability by choosing the right floor for different applications
- How to write specs that meet current standards (ANSI/ESD S20.20, FAA 019f, AATCC134, NFPA 99, Motorola R56)
- How to minimize ESD risk based on application and environment
- How to assess installations using approved test methods and instruments
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
Why You Should Attend
- Understand why conductivity is only half the solution and when low charge-generating materials are crucial
- Gain research-based evidence, standards, and test methods
- Reference proper grounding standards—and how to ground a static-control floor
- Speak the language: conductive, static dissipative, low charge generating
- Learn why every static-control floor must be tested after installation
